A concert in memoriam of Gena Dimitrova took place in Paris
On the eve of June 11, the date when we commemorate the third anniversary of Gena Dimitrova’s death, our embassy in Paris organized a concert with the famous Bulgarian singers, soprano Dilyana Georgieva and baritone Alexander Krunev, who works for the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Sofia. They performed opera arias, duets and also songs by Bulgarian composers to the accompaniment of the pianist Ivaylo Ivanov, who also works for the National Theatre. Guests at the event included ambassadors and permanent representatives of UNESCO and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, French and Bulgarian intellectuals, diplomats and government officers, as well as members of the Bulgarian community in Paris.
In her welcoming speech, the Bulgarian ambassador Irina Bokova reminded the audience that Gena Dimitrova was not only a singer possessing a great voice who brought fame to Bulgaria by performing all over the world, but also an ambassador who spread Bulgarian faith in goodness, which was tempered during centuries of hardship and ordeals. Dimitrova’s work has been continued by her talented disciple Dilyana Georgieva, who has performed at all Bulgarian operas and also by Aleksander Krunev, who was Dimitrova’s partner on stage many times. Georgieva and Krunev brilliantly performed arias and duets from operas by Massenet, Giordano, Puccini, Mozart and Verdi, and also songs by Pancho Vladigerov and Dobri Hristov. The concert was a good occasion for Bulgaria to present its forthcoming participation in the Season of European Cultures, organized by France, serving as the president of the EU, in the second half of 2008.
