On the eve of June 11, the date when we commemorate the third anniversary of Gena Dimitrova’s death, our embassy in Paris organized a concert with the famous Bulgarian singers, soprano Dilyana Georgieva and baritone Alexander Krunev, who works for the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Sofia. They performed opera arias, duets and also songs by Bulgarian composers to the accompaniment of the pianist Ivaylo Ivanov, who also works for the National Theatre. Guests at the event included ambassadors and permanent representatives of UNESCO and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, French and Bulgarian intellectuals, diplomats and government officers, as well as members of the Bulgarian community in Paris.

In her welcoming speech, the Bulgarian ambassador Irina Bokova reminded the audience that Gena Dimitrova was not only a singer possessing a great voice who brought fame to Bulgaria by performing all over the world, but also an ambassador who spread Bulgarian faith in goodness, which was tempered during centuries of hardship and ordeals. Dimitrova’s work has been continued by her talented disciple Dilyana Georgieva, who has performed at all Bulgarian operas and also by Aleksander Krunev, who was Dimitrova’s partner on stage many times. Georgieva and Krunev brilliantly performed arias and duets from operas by Massenet, Giordano, Puccini, Mozart and Verdi, and also songs by Pancho Vladigerov and Dobri Hristov. The concert was a good occasion for Bulgaria to present its forthcoming participation in the Season of European Cultures, organized by France, serving as the president of the EU, in the second half of 2008.

This was a concert, but also a spectacle, and a multitude of very nice moments… I, Alexander Krunev (baritone) and Orlin Goranov (tenor) were inspired by the friendly audience of Ruse during the concert on May 5th. We all celebrated the evening together with the Ruse Philharmonic Society and shared our passion for opera music. We made a really trilling swap – during the marvelous Brindisi (La Traviata) performance, Krunev (baritone) started acting as a conductor and the conductor Izmerliev started to sing. You can watch these unforgettable moments here and here.

After I became acquainted with the goals of “I CAN TOO” Foundation, I was extremely thrilled to learn that I can be of help to the children with impairment by inviting them to experience and share the beauty of the art of Opera. I organized a grand opera concert in the beautiful Military Club Hall in Sofia, named Spring Duets to help the needed. For I felt, and still firmly believe, that it is a communal duty, a human-to-human duty to care and think about these children; to dedicate even a bit of our busy lives and share our opportunities and success. I met parents, whose will to fight never succumbed to despair, despite the grave diagnoses their children were given. I felt that this adamant will should be supported not only by the efforts and advancement of modern medicine, but also by what is all too human: our human talents and the constant pursuit and love for beauty. As a singer and a mother I deeply believe in the healing potency of music: the artistic milieu, permeated by the positivism that surrounds every performance, heals the hearts of the children, burdened by their physical impairments and gives strength, hope, and light to their families. I have seen how music lifts their spirit and dreams, and ignites further the internal flame of courage and perseverance.
The entire revenue from Spring Duets concert went to aid the children’s smoother and gradual social adaptation and improve their immediate circumstances by the purchase of tailored to their needs special transportation vehicles.
